How to plan CCTV recording storage
A hard-drive capacity does not tell you how many days a CCTV system will retain. Storage use depends on recorded video, how many cameras record and when they record. Set a retention goal first, then check the actual recorder and storage configuration.
Collect the recording settings
List the recorded streams and their resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Decide whether each records continuously, on a schedule or on events. Scene activity, image noise and variable-bitrate settings can change the amount written. Audio and additional streams may also use space.
Use the settings actually recorded, not a camera maximum or the lower-resolution stream used for mobile viewing. A calculator provides a planning estimate; it does not replace a check of the installed system.
A simple hypothetical example
For constant video bitrate, decimal GB per day is approximately Mbps × 10.8 for one continuously recorded stream. This converts bits to bytes across 24 hours. For part-day recording, multiply by the fraction of the day, then by the number of similar streams.
For example, a hypothetical 2 Mbps stream uses about 21.6 GB of video in 24 hours. Four such streams use about 86.4 GB. These are video-only illustrations before audio, filesystem overhead, reserved space and real bitrate variation. They are not a retention promise for any H Zone product or package.
Check capacity and review real results
Confirm supported drive type, number of bays, capacity limits and recording configuration. Select storage appropriate to the workload. Accessible recording capacity may differ from the nominal capacity printed on a drive.
After setup, review the actual bitrate, schedule and oldest available footage. Adjust the plan if retention is insufficient. Check how important clips are exported and how overwriting is configured. Ask H Zone to confirm your storage arrangement instead of assuming a drive size always means a fixed number of days.
