DVR, NVR or Wi-Fi cameras: what should you compare?

These terms describe different parts of a security system. They do not establish image quality, recording time or compatibility on their own. Start with exact camera and recorder specifications, then decide how video, power and recordings will move around your property.

DVR and analog camera systems

A DVR commonly receives analog camera signals over coaxial cabling and records them to a hard drive. Check the supported signal format, input resolution and recording frame rate for the chosen model. Camera resolution or HDMI display resolution is not the same as recording capability.

Some DVRs also accept IP cameras in specified configurations. Converting channels or enabling an enhanced mode can change other features or limits. Do not assume every recorder is a universal hybrid; check its manual and the exact camera combination.

NVR and wired IP systems

An NVR records network-camera streams. Cameras may connect through a suitable switch or supported built-in recorder ports. Confirm supported streams, channel count, incoming bandwidth and storage limits. Check power requirements: an Ethernet connection alone does not mean a port supplies power.

For PoE equipment, check the supported power standard, per-port capability and total power budget. Combined camera demand must fit those limits. Have the complete network and power arrangement checked rather than relying only on port count.

Wi-Fi and 4G cameras

Wi-Fi cameras use a wireless connection, but many still require wired power. Battery and solar cameras have different charging and placement requirements. Check signal quality at the mounting point and confirm actual local-storage, cloud and remote-viewing options.

A 4G model needs a compatible SIM and active data plan for cellular use. Check network support and running costs before purchase. Browse relevant categories, then ask H Zone to confirm selected models and installation requirements for your site.
